Community Steps
Community Steps was created in 2021 by Laura Thro, a member of the Mountain Iron Fire Department and founder of Thro Kindness, to support and uplift students and their families through meaningful community connections. The program offers more than just new shoes—it provides an experience that reinforces care, confidence, and belonging.
Students are invited to choose their own athletic shoes at Famous Footwear, accompanied by first responders and other supportive adults. A podiatrist is present to ensure each pair fits well and meets the student’s specific needs.
Community Steps shifts the focus from financial hardship to the idea of "families needing extra community support," promoting inclusion and compassion. Before shopping, families share a meal and take part in a fun, educational carnival that teaches kids about fire safety and introduces them to local resources.
This initiative is about more than providing shoes—it’s about reminding young people and their families that they are seen, supported, and surrounded by a caring community every step of the way.

You’re Invited to Take a Step with Us
Do you or someone you know need a little extra support this year?
Community Steps, a program by Thro Kindness in partnership with the Mountain Iron Fire Department, is here to walk alongside students and families who could use some extra community care. We’re inviting families to apply for a special day designed to uplift, support, and celebrate you.
Participants will enjoy:
A brand-new pair of athletic shoes of the student’s choice from Famous Footwear
A free meal shared with first responders and caring volunteers
A fun-filled kids carnival with games, prizes, and fire safety education
A personalized shoe fitting by a professional podiatrist
Access to helpful community resources in a warm, judgment-free space
This event is completely free for participating families and focused on building connection, confidence, and community.
Because everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and included—every step of the way.

Host a booth in the Resource Room
The Resource Room: A Kids Carnival with Purpose
At Community Steps, the Resource Room transforms into a vibrant kids’ carnival—where fun and learning go hand in hand. Created to engage children in a playful, welcoming setting, the Resource Room introduces students and their families to essential community services in a way that’s both exciting and empowering.
Colorful booths, interactive games, and hands-on activities are hosted by local professionals, healthcare providers, educators, and other community partners. Children can enjoy carnival-style games, win small prizes, and explore stations that promote healthy habits and connect them to local resources. Whether they’re trying on firefighter gear, learning how to create a family emergency plan, or spinning a prize wheel filled with wellness tips, every activity is designed to spark curiosity and build confidence.
But the Resource Room is more than just entertainment—it’s about connection. It helps families learn about the support systems available to them while forming meaningful relationships with the people behind those services. By wrapping important information in joy and laughter, this special space creates lasting memories and strengthens community bonds.
