Our Story: In Their Words

Before Community Steps, we asked a simple question:

“How would this help your family?”

The answers weren’t simple.

They were honest.
They were heavy.
And they told a story we couldn’t ignore.

“We live paycheck to paycheck.”
“I can barely feed them and pay the bills.”
“We are behind on our power bill and rent.”
“I’m a single mom… I don’t get any help.”
“My husband passed away… I’m raising my son on disability.”
“We just got out of shelter and are still getting on our feet.”

For many families, a pair of shoes isn’t just a purchase—it’s a decision.

Do I pay the bills… or buy shoes?

Parents talked about juggling impossible choices—stretching one pair of shoes as long as they could, buying one now and hoping they could afford another later, or relying on hand-me-downs that don’t quite fit.

“My children would have shoes that fit them without struggling between do I pay bills or buy shoes.”
“Shoes are so expensive… even one less thing helps keep the lights on.”

But what stood out just as much wasn’t the struggle—it was what a small moment of support could change.

“It would take a burden off my shoulders.”
“It would be a huge relief.”
“It would mean everything.”

And for the kids?

It’s something deeper.

“Receiving a pair of shoes is like giving them a million dollars.”
“They feel proud.”
“It boosts their confidence.”
“They finally feel like they fit in.”

One parent shared:

“It would mean my child can start the school year with confidence… with a smile on her face… and just focus on being a kid.”

That’s what Community Steps is about.

Not just shoes.
Not just back-to-school support.

It’s about relieving pressure on families who are carrying more than most people see.
It’s about giving kids something that’s truly theirs—something new, something that fits, something they’re proud of.
It’s about confidence, dignity, and belonging.

And it’s about moments that stay with them long after the school year starts.

“My kids were so excited… so proud.”
“They still talk about it.”
“We are grateful beyond words.”

This is what your support makes possible.

Not just meeting a need—
but changing how a child walks into school…
how a parent breathes a little easier…
how a family feels seen and supported.

Because sometimes, something as simple as a new pair of shoes…

is actually everything.

Together, we can lift the weight off families and show kids they are seen, valued, and supported.

Small steps.

Real change.

Stronger community.

Where Your Donation Goes

At Community Steps, every dollar is intentionally used to support students and their families with dignity, connection, and care.

We are hoping to serve 500 students and over 200 caregivers across five community events in August. We never limit who can attend—because belonging matters. That means meals, support, and resources often extend to siblings, extended family, and others who show up alongside each student.

Total Project Cost: $51,000
Average Cost Per Student: $101

What $101 Provides

When you give $101.00, you’re not just buying a pair of shoes—you’re creating a full experience of support.

Here’s how that breaks down per student:

  • Athletic Shoes – $70
The core of our mission. New, properly fitted shoes that build confidence and remove barriers while reminding students are with them every step of the way.

  • Meals & Shared Experience – $18
Food for students, caregivers, and families—because connection happens around the table.

  • Caregiver Support & Gifts – $9
Small but meaningful items that recognize and uplift the adults showing up for these youth.

  • Haircuts & Personal Care – $2
Helping students feel confident, seen, and ready to start strong.

  • Sibling Support & Inclusion – $1.50
Ensuring younger siblings feel included and valued.

  • Event Materials & Essentials – $0.50
Lanyards, cards, signage, and the small details that make the experience smooth and welcoming.

Why It Matters

Community Steps is about more than meeting basic needs—it’s about building connection and strengthening families.

Every $101 tells a student:
You matter. You belong. And your community is behind you.
