Community Steps

Community Steps was created in 2021 by Laura Thro, a member of the Mountain Iron Fire Department and founder of Thro Kindness LLC, to support youth and families through meaningful community connections and access to essential resources.

Community Steps provides more than material support—it creates experiences that foster care, confidence, and a sense of belonging for young people and their families.

Through the program, participating youth are invited to select new athletic shoes with guidance and encouragement from supportive adults, including first responders and community volunteers. When available, professionals such as podiatrists assist in ensuring that shoes fit properly and meet the needs of each participant.

Community Steps intentionally frames participation around community support rather than financial hardship, helping reduce stigma while promoting dignity, inclusion, and compassion. Program events often begin with a shared community meal followed by interactive activities where youth and families can learn about fire safety, connect with local organizations, and engage with positive community role models.

By bringing together youth, families, volunteers, and community partners in a welcoming environment, Community Steps strengthens relationships and helps ensure that young people feel seen, supported, and surrounded by a community that cares about their well-being and success.

You’re Invited to Take a Step with Us

Do you or someone you know need a little extra support this year?

Community Steps, a program by Thro Kindness in partnership with the Mountain Iron Fire Department, is here to walk alongside students and families who could use some extra community care. We’re inviting families to apply for a special day designed to uplift, support, and celebrate you.

Participants will enjoy:

  • A brand-new pair of athletic shoes of the student’s choice from Famous Footwear

  • A free meal shared with first responders and caring volunteers

  • A fun-filled kids carnival with games, prizes, and fire safety education

  • A personalized shoe fitting by a professional podiatrist

  • Access to helpful community resources in a warm, judgment-free space

This event is completely free for participating families and focused on building connection, confidence, and community.

Because everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and included—every step of the way.

Host a booth in the Resource Room

The Resource Room: A Kids Carnival with Purpose

At Community Steps, the Resource Room transforms into a vibrant kids’ carnival—where fun and learning go hand in hand. Created to engage children in a playful, welcoming setting, the Resource Room introduces students and their families to essential community services in a way that’s both exciting and empowering.

Colorful booths, interactive games, and hands-on activities are hosted by local professionals, healthcare providers, educators, and other community partners. Children can enjoy carnival-style games, win small prizes, and explore stations that promote healthy habits and connect them to local resources. Whether they’re trying on firefighter gear, learning how to create a family emergency plan, or spinning a prize wheel filled with wellness tips, every activity is designed to spark curiosity and build confidence.

But the Resource Room is more than just entertainment—it’s about connection. It helps families learn about the support systems available to them while forming meaningful relationships with the people behind those services. By wrapping important information in joy and laughter, this special space creates lasting memories and strengthens community bonds.
