Understanding Domestic Violence Dynamics: Staying Isn’t Consent

Description:

This training provides an in-depth, trauma-informed overview of the dynamics of domestic violence before a survivor leaves an abusive relationship. Participants will explore the complex barriers that keep individuals in unsafe situations, including psychological, financial, social, and cultural factors. The session emphasizes that staying in an abusive relationship is not a choice made lightly, nor is it consent to abuse. Through case examples and discussion, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of power, control, and coercive behaviors, equipping them to respond with empathy and informed support.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the key patterns and tactics of control used in domestic violence, including emotional, financial, and coercive strategies.

  2. Explain the barriers and risks that may prevent a survivor from leaving, and why leaving is often not immediate or straightforward.

  3. Demonstrate an informed, nonjudgmental approach to supporting individuals experiencing abuse, recognizing that staying does not equal consent.
